Virginia Lt Governor Ghazala Hashmi

Virginia’s List is excited to kick-off our 3rd Annual Signature Event on International Women’s Day, Sunday, March 8, in Richmond, VA. The afternoon will bring together leaders, supporters, and advocates from across the Commonwealth to reflect on the progress women have made and to look ahead at the work still to come. This year’s gathering will celebrate the leadership, resilience, and impact of women shaping Virginia’s future at every level. From elected officials to community organizers, the event will spotlight the collective power that continues to move the Commonwealth forward.

We are especially honored to welcome Virginia’s Lieutenant Governor, Ghazala Hashmi, as one of our featured speakers. In November, she made history as the first Muslim woman elected to statewide office in the United States. Her achievement is the result of years of dedication, hard-fought campaigns, and steadfast leadership. Throughout her time in the State Senate, she has championed policies that support women, families, and communities across Virginia. Her story reflects both the progress that has been made and the possibilities that lie ahead, making her voice a fitting highlight for an afternoon dedicated to celebrating women’s leadership and impact.

About our special guest, Ghazala Hashmi

Ghazala F. Hashmi is the 43rd Lieutenant Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia. She is the first Muslim woman to be elected to any statewide office in the nation, as well as the first South Asian American elected statewide in Virginia. Lieutenant Governor Hashmi spent nearly 30 years in higher education, teaching literature at the University of Richmond and then at Reynolds Community College, before being elected in 2019 to her first term in the Virginia State Senate.

While in the Senate, Lieutenant Governor Hashmi built a reputation as a thoughtful, effective legislator focused on strengthening public education, expanding access to affordable health care and housing, protecting reproductive freedom, and advancing economic opportunity. During her tenure, she played a key role in securing historic investments in K–12 and higher education, supporting working families, and defending civil rights for all Virginians.
