Virginia’s List Celebrates Historic Wins for Women in the Commonwealth

ree

Alexandria, VA – Last night, the Commonwealth of Virginia made history. For the first time in nearly 250 years, Virginians have elected a woman governor, Abigail Spanberger, and the first Muslim woman to ever win statewide office, Ghazala Hashmi, as lieutenant governor. Together, they represent a new era of leadership in the Commonwealth.

Virginia’s List proudly congratulates Governor-elect Spanberger, Lieutenant Governor-elect Hashmi, and all of our endorsed women who ran up and down the ballot. From the Governor’s Mansion to the House of Delegates to local offices, these victories send a clear message: Virginia is ready for women to lead.

“Tonight, Virginia shattered the glass ceiling and the future is full of possibilities,” said Lateisha Garrett, Chair of the Virginia’s List Board of Directors. “We’ve proven that when women are on the ballot, Democrats win. And when women lead, our communities thrive. But our work is far from over. The next chapter begins now as we continue building the pipeline of women leaders who will shape Virginia’s future.”

In addition to Spanberger and Hashmi’s victories, Virginia’s List celebrates key wins from its first-ever local endorsements:

  • Kecia Evans, Stafford County Board of Supervisors

  • Shannon Jones, Commonwealth’s Attorney, Newport News

  • Sanu Dieng-Cooper, Treasurer, Newport News

In all, Virginia's list endorsed 45 women in 2025 and 31 claimed victory last night. These women will join other Virginia’s List-endorsed candidates who will bring principled, pro-choice leadership to their communities.

“This election is proof that investing in Democratic women, from the local level to the governor’s office, pays off for all Virginians,” Garrett added.

Barely a year into Donald Trump’s second term, Virginians are already feeling the consequences of his reckless brand of leadership, while Virginia Republicans have bowed to his every whim.

“Voters know that the rising prices, health clinic closures, threats to reproductive rights, and a federal shutdown that’s hit our state’s workforce hard are all due to Donald Trump’s disastrous policies. Tonight, Virginia announced they are ready for a new era,” Garrett said.

Virginia’s List will continue its work to support Democratic women across the Commonwealth — because the fight for equity, opportunity, and reproductive freedom doesn’t end tonight.
