Virginia's List Announces 11 Endorsements for House of Delegates, Lieutenant Governor

Virginia’s List is pleased to announce its endorsement of 11 progressive Democratic women candidates running for the Virginia House of Delegates and lieutenant governor in 2017.

Women represent only 17 percent of the members of the Virginia House, and Virginia’s List aims to increase this number. This year, a record 58 Democratic Virginia women stepped up to run. To win, they need our financial support.

“We’re taking the critical step of investing in these women now before the primary,” said Virginia’s List Chair Julie Jakopic. “For those with primary challenges, we hope early support will help them win and move on to the general election. For all the women we have endorsed, we hope our early support will help set them up for success in the general election.”

Eight of the women we endorse face primary challenges on June 13. First, we support the outstanding work of incumbent Delegates Lashrecse Aird (District 63), Delores McQuinn (District 70), and Jeion Ward (District 92).

We also endorse four women who we know will bring fresh ideas and leadership to the House: Hala Ayala (District 51), Karrie Delaney (District 67), Kelly Fowler (District 21), and Danica Roem (District 13).

Additionally, we endorse three Democratic women in their general election races, incumbents Delegate Betsy Carr (District 69), Delegate Kathleen Murphy (District 34), and newcomer Cheryl Turpin (District 85).

In Virginia’s history, only one woman has served in statewide office, Attorney General Mary Sue Terry (1986–1993), and this year we have the opportunity to change that. Virginia’s List also endorses Susan Platt for lieutenant governor.

Each of the women endorsed has an impressive record of service. Karrie Delaney is an excellent example of the caliber of women we have endorsed. “Karrie Delaney has dedicated her life to public service,” said Jakopic. “From working with abused youth and juvenile offenders to fighting for families, she is a proven leader who stands up for those in need. She has a strong track record of working with stakeholders to create effective solutions. As Delegate, Karrie will champion paid family leave, paycheck fairness, and affordable healthcare for all. That's why Virginia's List is proud to endorse Karrie's campaign for Virginia's 67th House District.”

This is our first round of endorsements, and we look forward to endorsing additional candidates for the general election.
